Palace of the Popes - Avignon, France
The palace of the popes, considered to be the historic centre of Avignon located in Avignon, France, is one of the most important and the biggest gothic buildings all over Europe. Earlier Avignon was of no great importance and went under extensive development; it acted as the home of many popes and anti popes back in the 1300’s, as they took refuge, because of the havoc and chaos going around in Rome. The palace was built on the northern edge of Avignon, the site was earlier occupied by the bishops of Avignon, and the palace is occupied on around 3 acres and is enormously expensive, as it consumed a large amount of income from the offices of the pope. The rooms of the palace are famous for their beautiful paintings on the walls and on the roof of it.

After the late 1300’s the popes started to depart to Rome, but the anti popes refused to go back, but were forced to go back during the French revolution during the 1700’s and the castle became a place of massacre of many revolutionaries back then.

The offices of the popes were taken over and were transformed into prisons and as military barracks, and it was thought that the building was on the verge of destruction but ironically this never happened, as the palace was constantly repaired and developed since then,

and it was only then when the palace was vacated it became a national museum in the 1600’s and the majority of the office s of popes are now open to the general public, who visit the places every year and get to know the history behind the castle, the place also hose a large convention centre and holds the recorded of many departments.
